For the girls, a two-piece swimsuit can also work as a second layer and/or underwear. (My wobbly bits are best hidden under a tankini rather than exposed in a bikini!) A one-piece swimsuit is too hard to get in and out of under clothes. Men's swimsuits can double as shorts or underwear, as well, if need be.

I avoid packing sleeveless tops. For both sexes they are deemed highly inappropriate in almost every major religion’s buildings: St Peter’s in the Vatican, any mosque and/or any Hindu temple will ask you to cover your arms at a minimum, male and female. They also tend to show your money belt (if you’re wearing a shoulder holster-style model) and leave your shoulders exposed to uncomfortable rubbing if you’re carrying a pack or a day bag over your shoulder. What’s more, this rubbing can remove sunscreen you may have applied and leave your shoulders exposed to sunburn. Wear a top with at least short sleeves. In fact, if it’s very hot and dry weather, buy a long-sleeved top. The reason most tribes who evolved wandering around deserts cover up is because, in the long run, it’s more comfortable and slows down your body’s dehydration.
