An Explosion of Colour, 1886-1888
When Vincent showed up unexpectedly in Paris in 1886, his ever-loyal brother took him in. They soon found a larger apartment with a studio and lived in together in Montmartre, the artistsâ quarter of the city.
Paris was the centre of the art world at the time, with new and exciting exhibitions, a thriving artist community and avant-garde work pushing the boundaries of art all the time. There was an abundance of opportunity for aspiring artists to train and work together. Vincentâs immersion in the Paris art scene was to have a profound effect on his work and it is from this point onwards that he developed the style which he is now associated with.
Theo introduced Vincent to the rich, colourful work being produced in Paris at the time by celebrated artists such as Monet, Renoir and Degas. Vincent saw for himself the difference in his predominantly dark work and the colourful world of the Impressionists.
As Vincent studied and worked in the studio of the artist Fernand Cormon, he came into contact with a new and exciting group of artists which included the notable names of Toulouse Lautrec, Antequin and Russell. He was inspired by the work of Gaugin and Seurat. There was much trading of artworks between the artists working in Paris at the time and he collected some notable Impressionist works.
Vincent became part of the artist community in Paris, exploring the various new approaches represented by a new generation of artists who were working beyond the scope of Impressionism. He formed close friendships with Paul Gaugin and Emile Bernard, with whom he exchanged letters and swapped paintings and drawings. Bernard would go on to write the first biography of Vincentâs life.
Vincent also furthered his understanding and appreciation of Japanese art while in paris, and it was an interest shared by his brother. The brothers did not always see eye to eye while sharing a home, and there was occasional conflict between them as Theo found Vincent extremely difficult to live with, describing it as âalmost unbearableâ. However, they made peace and together they collected hundreds of these Japanese works. Vincentâs work was heavily influenced by his passion for the style. He went as far as to share his love of these works with his friends and created an exhibition of them.
It was all incredibly inspiring, and Vincent was fired up with a new passion for colour and light. He took long walks along the Seine and absorbed all that Paris had to offer. This was an artistic awakening for Vincent. He was experimenting with Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Pointillism, Symbolism, Cloisonnism and never forgetting his love of the old Dutch masters.
As a result, Vincentâs work exploded with colour and vibrancy. He worked quickly, with shorter brush strokes and was fast developing his own unique style. now that he was far from his peasant scenes, the themes of his artwork naturally changed. He painted Parisian scenes; the streets, rooftops and cafes that defined the Paris of the time.
