When he visited Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in June, he gave painting lessons to an Algerian Zouave second lieutenant named Paul-Eugène Milliet and painted boats on the sea and the village. MacKnight introduced Van Gogh to the Belgian painter Eugène Boch, who was staying in nearby Fontvieille, in July.

He received word that Paul Gauguin was planning to visit him at Arles in August of 1888, and while waiting for his arrival, Van Gogh painted his now famous Sunflowers. He also painted a portrait of Boch, and a study he called The Poet Against a Starry Sky.
