Twelve

Powdered sugar fell like a light dusting of snow over the waffles’ ridges. I topped the breakfast with plump, red strawberries from the patch behind the B and B. My mouth watered at the sight of the fresh meal as I carried it to two lovely gentlemen on their ten-year anniversary trip. I’d skipped breakfast in favor of an early morning arrival.

The couple by the window beamed at me. Their bright T-shirts read Sorry, he’s taken in matching colors.

“Fuel up for that hike,” I said as I placed the plates in front of them. “Our storms are dangerous around here so you really need to make it back before the clouds roll in.”

Mr. Pin nodded and his husband mirrored his agreement. “Will do, Miss Loxley. We take your advice seriously. We just love the romance in the local legend and wanted to see the falls for ourselves.”

My heart warmed at the mention of our town’s beloved history. If I could take a day off, I’d give these two a free tour and guide their hike. But I needed every spare second to locate the dagger in the least suspicious ways possible. With Gideon around, I’d resorted to trading stories like an info broker and reserving break-ins only when absolutely necessary.

“Legend says that if you catch the sunrise reflecting on the falls, you can see into the faery realm where Grayson Baird and Ellery are still alive.” I smiled.

“It sounds silly but our marriage has me convinced magic exists,” Mr. Pin said with a wink at his husband. “Maybe tomorrow we’ll make it out before sunrise. If you’re not busy with a meeting.”

Mr. Pin’s husband shook his head. “Are you kidding me? I canceled everything for this trip. I’m here to give you my undivided attention. No work.”

Mr. Pin reached for his husband’s hand across the table and gave it a squeeze. Tears lined his eyelids. The look shared between the couple struck my heart and caused it to skip a beat. I cleared my throat and took a breath to gather myself. I’d successfully shoved all emotion about the kiss down into an imaginary safe that even I couldn’t crack. But the love between this couple did the trick.

My stomach twisted, and I no longer regretted skipping breakfast. The moment our lips had separated, guilt settled in and I didn’t want to lie to Gideon any longer.

“I think we’re all good here.” Mr. Pin’s voice was kind but the suggestion rang clear. He wanted a romantic breakfast alone with his husband and that didn’t include the presence of a zoned-out server who couldn’t get her mind off a particular police officer.

I swallowed and nodded, offering them a smile before darting back into the kitchen. I sucked in a cleansing breath and rubbed my hands over my forehead to push back a flyway strand of hair.

I took out the borrowed ring from the pawnshop and slipped it back on my finger. It was once a placeholder so creepy men wouldn’t hit on me at the casino and the rich women would think I fit in.
