Chapter Thirty-Four

As the gryphon beat its wings, the resulting wind blasted Liv in the face. Still, she didn’t wiggle or move. Instead, she kept hold of the sword in her hands, not even noticing the blood running into her face and making her head hot.

Flying over the side of the cliff, the black gryphon sped down to the meadow below where the ground wasn’t rumbling, unaffected by the trespassing.

Liv’s brain could hardly register what had happened. Plato had many secrets, and strangely, she was happy not to know all of them. It almost made it better that way.

He set her down in a field of lush grass and white flowers, disappearing almost at once. When Liv had popped to her feet, she spun around several times, thinking he must have been hiding. However, he was gone, and she didn’t think that it was because another person had joined them on the meadow.

Similar to how he knew things about her, Liv guessed that the lynx had been drained so badly that retreating was his best option.

Knowing that she shouldn’t delay for a single moment, Liv opened a portal and stepped through, carrying the sword she’d retrieved with her.

Not until she was in the safety of her studio apartment did Liv pull the sword out from underneath her cape.

Although it had been many years since she’d laid eyes on the object before her, she knew without a doubt that she was holding her mother’s sword Inexorabilis.

Like Bellator, Guinevere never left without this weapon. It was a part of her. Elf-made, Liv appreciated the craftsmanship of the blade. The hilt had an intricate design, and the blade seemed to speak to Liv. Like when she’d held Turbinger, she could hear some of its messages but not all of them. It was like the information was being broadcast over a static-filled radio.

Feeling closer to her mother than she had in a long time, Liv tightened her hands on the hilt.

Two messages came through loud and clear. The first was mostly a feeling connected to the steady jolt of electricity that coursed through her, just like it always had when she touched her mother’s sword. For that reason, Liv knew that this sword could never belong to her even if she wanted it to. It wasn’t suited to her, for whatever reason.

Still, pride filled Liv’s chest as she gazed at the weapon.

And then there was a second message that she could hear above the static, in the voice of her mother:

“The future belongs to you, my child. To our family. I have buried memories deep within this sword, and only an expert can uncover them. But be careful. What you discover can’t be unlearned, and it will change everything.”
