Hamilton appears to have been one of the least controlling figures discussed in this book. Admittedly, he tended to be bossy towards his sisters if they failed to write to him. Also, he was inclined to influence the direction of studies of his sisters as well, particularly Eliza:

I have heard from various quarters, [that] your natural indolence … grows upon you – and you may be sure that if you allow it to do so – if you allow the habit to take possession of you, of not bending your whole energy of thought and mental power to whatever pursuit or study you are engaged in, those energies, however great, will as it were grow rusty and decay.
