Sunny

There was something just under the surface that made me uncomfortable. Something that shouldn’t be here. I could feel it. By the tension in Sham’s shoulders, I was sure he felt it, too.

Maybe it wasn’t that something was here that didn’t belong but that there was no sign that Atar had been here in ages. So long ago that there was no trace of him at all. The neat lines around the flowerbeds and the grooming around the trees had long since been forgotten. The wildness in the area had increased, making the garden feel untamed and feral.

Even the vines that crawled along the bridge were a sign to how neglected the garden has become. Atar had always kept the bridge clear of vegetation. He didn’t want the wood to rot.

Brushing a hand over my face, I turned back around to skip over the shallow part of the stream. I couldn’t make out Lux in the distance as she floated on the pool. She’d been lying flat, except her pert, round breasts peeked out of the water like mini mountains on the smooth surface.

I grinned, turning to one of the wild flowerbeds. Once, they’d been a prize collection of dahlias. But now, these were all wildflowers. They’d suffocated the delicate needs and fertile soil of the dahlias.

We weren’t going to find anything here. It had been far too long since Atar had been in this garden, I almost questioned whether he cared about it at all anymore. It was left forgotten, nature having nearly reclaimed all the intention and purpose in the design.

Sighing, I headed back for Lux. Might as well wait with our pretty lady. I’d rather watch her float on the water than look for clues that didn’t exist. When my brothers were ready to call it quits, they’d gravitate towards Lux, too.

The thought made me smile. Maybe there were some questions that needed to be answered concerning how Lux became tied-in with us, but I didn’t see this as a bad thing. I’d seen how she dealt with Rage in his natural state. She should have been terrified. Her instincts should have told her to run.

Instead, she’d said he was hot. Sexy.

On top of that, somehow she’d managed to not only survive his brutal hold and aggression while he fucked her as he came down from his rage, but she’d somehow succeeded in satisfying him enough that she was the only one he’d needed.

I wasn’t naive enough to think that would carry over into this evening. Rage would need more when we were no longer in a place that set us all on edge. But he was functioning as a man. Thinking clearly and logically.

Lux had done that on her own. Innately.

Apo was right. This girl was meant for us. And Gedd was right. She was fucking perfect.

Her scream filling the garden made me freeze for a split second. That wasn’t a pleasure-filled scream. That was fear. What she should have sounded like when she’d seen Rage as a monster of Eschat.
