CHAPTER 6

"I should suspend your ass," Captain Ryker said after systematical going over all the laws and regulations Jarrod and I had broken by going into that crime scene. "But it looks like you might have closed up this case, so I'm feeling generous."

Jarrod relaxed a little in his chair, but if I knew anything about the Captain, he wouldn't be for long.

"Still, you're too much of a loose cannon. I'm assigning you a new partner. From now on you're paired up with Officer Mitchell."

"What? But she's a witch," Jarrod said, half rising out of his chair.

"And a damn fine officer. You'll do well to remember that." Ryker's voice was cold.

Jarrod settled back in his chair with a clip nod.

"Good. Now, I don't want to hear anything else about you bringing civilians into a case, besides in the capacity as a consultant and especially not arming them with PCU weapons. Got it?"

"Yes, sir."

"Dismissed."

We both stood up.

"Not you, Abbey."

I sighed and slid back in the chair. Jarrod gave me a pitying look, before stepping out of the office.

"You know, I had half a mind to throw you in lock-up."

"Very kind of you, Captain," I said.

He glared at me. "So even two years off the force hasn't cured you of being a smartass."

"Year and a half, sir."

He raised an eyebrow. "You're counting?"

I tightened my lips.

"I really don't get you, Abbey. You love this job, you can barely keep away."

"Tell that to my shrink," I said with a shrug.

"I read the reports. I've seen worse head cases than you working the field. Shit, you look like the poster boy for mental health. So want to explain to me why you're playing police officer instead of actually being one?"

There were several reasons I could have given, but most of them were bullshit and Captain Ryker knew it. So I went with the easiest one. "Have you been up to Lakeside lately?"

Captain Ryker swore. "Get the hell out of my office. I don't want to see you in here again unless you're wearing a badge."

I quickly stood up and went to the door. "Thank you, Captain."

He grunted and I stepped outside. Jarrod was waiting for me. "Thought you might need a ride."

My car was still at the apartment in Pine Hills. On the way out, I saw Acas. I waved him over. "Hey, do you know what tidak lagi means? The sigbin said it when it was attacking me."

He nodded. "It's Malay. It means, 'not again.'"

"Why would it say that?" Jarrod asked beside me.

"You touched the clay jar, didn't you?" Acas said, practically bouncing in excitement.

"Yeah," I said, scratching the bandage on my neck.

He nodded as if that explained everything. "It probably got confused and thought you were going to seal it back up again. Must have sensed you were psychic, so it attacked."

"How was I going to seal it? I'm psychic, not a witch," I pointed out.

"Not everything makes the distinction," Acas said, with a flippant wave of his hand.

I frowned and then shook my head, walking away.
