Chapter Twenty-Eight

Rylie

Days turned into weeks. Every sunset, I went inside bloody and bruised, but my skills improved every day.

I was standing in the kitchen with my in-laws after a day of training, finishing up the dishes from dinner. My body ached from getting my butt kicked at training. I wasn’t even close to being on Radella’s level, but she certainly wasn’t knocking me over every five seconds anymore. I still needed more training, but because of my progress I figured that I’d start training with my father-in-law sooner than anyone thought. It felt so weird to have in-laws. I never considered Varwik or Satine part of the family and Kallan hadn’t had anyone else so I had gotten used to the fact I’d never really have in-laws.

I dried my hands on the towel and walked out of the kitchen to the living room where Lena was examining Kallan’s arms. His shirt was off and I thought back to the time when his hot body would have had me in a tizzy. Seemed like a lifetime ago.

A big bruise on his side stopped me dead in my tracks. How did that happen? They both looked up at me as if they were waiting for permission.

“Go ahead, Lena.”

Lena began healing Kallan’s injuries. Not able to look at my husband’s bruised body, I hurried out of the living room and down the hallway to our room. Quietly, I shut the door. Leaning against it, breathing deep and long, I tried to control my emotions. Once I was sure I wouldn’t cry, I pushed off the door and sat down at my vanity, staring at my own bruised reflection in the mirror.

Bruises covered my body from head to toe. They were all in various stages from the blackest with deep purples to the ones almost done healing that were yellows and greens. My worst ones were received a couple days ago. Radella kicked me twice right in the ribs where a large bruise was now formed. In the same moment I was distracted by the hit, her fighting stick whacked me in the face, giving me a nasty black eye.

My eyes never leaving the mirror, I pulled my legs up to my chest, resting my hands on my knees. I thought about Kallan’s bruises and how I didn’t even realize he was hurt.

Once Ella was gone, I shut off from people, rarely engaging in conversation, and keeping everyone at a distance, even Kallan. In that moment, I was so angry and ashamed of myself. It was unfair of me to do this to him. He was just as sad about Ella. But yet, I didn’t let him in. I pushed them all away. I pushed Kallan away. What kind of wife was I? I was mean and horrible by pushing him away over something that wasn’t his fault and something neither of us had control over. Who does something like that? Kallan was the one person in my life who gave up everything the same way I had to when Ella left and I was cruel to him.
