Carter
The small cabin boasted sparse furniture, a worn couch on the side of the room opposite of the kitchenette, and a small table with two mismatched chairs closer to the stove, where Carter was heating up some water in a pot. Brand took one of the chairs, not certain how he should proceed. He hadn't meant to just blurt it out first thing, but after having to redirect here from Carter's house, and then stumbling in the woods for close to twenty minutes, falling down countless ditches, and then trying to talk to a naked Carter, any ideas he'd had about how to ease into the topic had flown out the window. Carter was distracting enough now, wearing only a pair of faded blue jeans that hung low around his waist without the support of a belt. Occasionally, Carter would turn just right as he moved around the kitchen, gathering cups and spoons and cocoa mix, and Brand would catch a flash of the distracting vee-line of his hips, dipping down into his pants.
This wasn't the first time Brand had seen Carter shirtlessâthe water park had given him a full day of the viewâbut since recognizing that Carter was, in fact, his mate, everything had changed and Brand couldn't tear his eyes from the lines of Carter's enticing muscles.
Brand glanced away, but time after time, his eyes slid back.
Finally, though it had probably only been a few minutes, Carter sat across from Brand and handed him his cup of hot chocolate.
Carter took a long sip, licking his top lip clean of chocolate foam as he set his mug down. Brand wrapped his hands firmly around his own mug. The warmth helped, but he really needed to do something with his hands before they reached out to touch Carter of their own accord.
"Now," Carter said. "Let's start back at the beginning. You've realized that I'm your mate?" Neither his voice or his expression revealed anything to Brand. Whatever Brand had expected from Carter, this definitely wasn't it. Brand nodded.
"What happened?"
"I⦠at the restaurant⦠I smelled something. Like fresh bread first thing in the morning, but better. And then all of a sudden I realized it was you. I'd never smelled anything so amazing. Your scent was like nothing I'd ever experienced before."
Brand sensed something unlock in Carter, though he didn't seem to move a muscle.
"Why did you run?"
Brand started to lift his hand to brush a stray lock of hair out of his face, but quickly gripped the mug again when he noticed how badly his hand was shaking. "I wasn't sure what it meant. I'd never sensed that with you before."
Carter nodded and took another sip.
"Are you⦠upset?" Brand asked. This was what Carter had wanted, hadn't he? An ice cold fear tore through Brand, fear that Brand had been mistaken and that Carter had been playing him for some reason.
But Carter shook his head slowly. "Not upset," he said. "I'm⦠I'm pretty terrible at emotions. Just this afternoon, when
