A whole lot of beautiful was happening in front of me. Landon, fast asleep, Caleb laying him down on his little, twin-sized bed. Landon fell asleep halfway back to my apartment, the afternoon having completely worn him out. After the game, there’d been more rides around the ranch. Caleb introduced Landon to some of the workers, took him back to the horse barn to give the animals some treats. Bryce and Caleb then drove Landon out in a rusted, faded blue Ford pickup truck that had an upholstered bench seat to go see the land where Bryce was working on building his petting zoo and brewery. From what I learned, there wasn’t much there except for a small barn and fencing, and a cement foundation poured for the brewery. Construction would start soon, before winter hit. Animals would be purchased in the spring if everything went according to schedule. And while I also learned Bryce still lived in his parents’ large home, he had more land to build his own home out near where he’d be working. Considering it was on the Kelleys’ ranch land, it was still a mile away and he was adamant he wanted to be close to the animals.

Nonetheless, Landon had returned to the main house full of excitement and glorious shouts about being promised he could name some of the goats Bryce planned on starting with.

We left stuffed with great food, happy, and me, grateful there’d been no more talk or questions about my family, and exhausted. Now, Caleb was tucking him in, slipping Landon’s boots off his feet, and tugging off his jeans.

“The shirt can stay on,” I whispered.

“You sure?”

I needed to wash his sheets and do laundry tomorrow anyway. One night of sleeping dirty wouldn’t hurt anything. I nodded and then stepped back into the hall and headed toward the kitchen.

I went straight to the kitchen and tore the cork out of my red wine bottle I’d slowly been emptying through the weekend. I was taking my first sip when Landon’s door clicked closed and Caleb immediately appeared after. He headed straight toward where I was in the kitchen, hip propped to the counter so I could see down the hallway.

He wore a soft, tired smile, but everything in his body showed him to be relaxed. Comfortable. Completely at home with the fact a couple weeks ago he didn’t know he had a kid, and now he was tucking him into bed at night.

He dipped his chin toward the wine bottle. “Got any more of that for me?”

I slid the bottle his way and grabbed a fresh glass from the cupboard above my sink. “Here. I have more, too.”

While he poured his glass, since there wasn’t much left, I pulled another bottle from the cupboard above my fridge and my corkscrew from a nearby drawer.

The corkscrew was tugged from my hand and the fresh bottle opened before I realized Caleb had moved closer.

“You didn’t tell me about your family.”

“There wasn’t much to say.”
