HENRY

The dim light of the cell flickers over Madeline’s frail form. Her skin is pale, her green eyes hollow, and her body weakened, yet there’s a spark of determination in her gaze. I see Natalie in her, fierce and unbreakable.

“Natalie, my baby, where is she? Why am I here? Where have they taken her?” Madeline’s voice is frantic, her confusion tangible.

I take her hand because it’s all I can think to do in this fucked-up situation. She’s cold, trembling, and I want to offer her comfort. “I think Natalie is here. I came for her, to try and get both of you out.”

Madeline tenses, releasing my hand. “Who are you?” Her eyes search mine, full of fear and suspicion.

The realization hits me like a ton of bricks— Amelia erased her memory when she turned back time. In this timeline, Madeline never met me.

“I’m her… Natalie’s… boyfriend.” The words feel strange in my mouth. We haven’t labeled anything, but I assume that’s what we are. Soulmates might be more like it.

“Boyfriend? She’s a baby.” Madeline pushes up, slinking away from me, pressing against the wall, like she’s terrified of me. “Who the hell are you? What have you done with her?”

She thinks Natalie is a baby? My heart drops into my stomach. When Amelia reset time, something must have distorted Madeline’s memory, erasing some, but not all.

“No, Madeline, Mrs. Covington… listen…” I stumble over my words, desperation splicing through my core.

“Don’t call me that. It’s not my last name. I didn’t want to marry that man. I don’t want his name. Get away from me. Stay away.” She begins screaming, her voice echoing through the cell, and I feel a surge of sympathy mixed with growing dread. Her body begins to tremble, panic clearly setting in. “You took her, didn’t you? You took my baby girl!” She’s nearly hysterical, her eyes wide with terror.

“Please listen to me. Natalie’s not a baby anymore. Your daughter is eighteen years old.” I force the words out, hoping she’ll understand.

“Eighteen?” The word seems to catch her attention, and she looks at me, bewildered. “No, no, she’s just a baby. Where is she? Is this all because of Cy? Are you working for him?” Madeline’s face crumples, tears spilling from her eyes. “Amelia said she would keep me and the baby safe.” Her voice falters, giving way to tears, her body trembling under the weight of her sorrow.

My mind reels, confusion and horror warring within me. Amelia? Safe? The words don’t make sense, not with what I’ve seen, not with what I know of that woman.

“Please, Mrs. Cov—Madeline, I’m trying to help you and your daughter. And I need you to help me understand. What happened? How did you end up here?” My voice is urgent, my fear for her, for Natalie, growing by the second.

Her eyes, clouded with confusion and pain, suddenly lock on to mine. The pieces of the puzzle are there, but they’re scattered, hidden in shadows and secrets. Desperation mixes with determination as I grapple for a way to reach her, to jog her memory, to rebuild the bridges Amelia has burned.
