Chapter Twenty-Three

Rooney

Ira had fallen asleep on the couch after eating his snack while watching TV, and as Wells picked him up to put him to bed, I waited on him in the kitchen where I was still drinking the glass of red wine he had poured me.

Something about tonight was making me nervous, but not in a bad way.

Maybe it was the wine, but I was still on my first glass and normally I didn’t start feeling the alcohol until after two glasses.

I breathed in deeply and tried to calm myself, but when Wells walked back into the kitchen, my heartbeat picked up speed.

It felt as if it was going to explode in my chest.

“Everything okay?” he asked as he noticed me staring at him.

“Yes, everything’s perfect. Is he asleep?”

“Yeah, he woke up for a short moment but he won’t wake up until tomorrow morning. Running around that flower field this afternoon wore him out.”

He stepped in front of me and placed his hands on either side of me on the counter, making me lean against it with no escape in sight.

“Deep thoughts?” he asked, his eyes wandering all over my face and studying me closely.

“Yeah, I…I was just thinking about us,” I told him quietly, reaching out with one hand to place it on his shoulder.

“Is that so? And what kind of things are flashing through your mind about us?”

He grabbed the glass out of my hand and placed it on the counter, then he put both hands on my waist to lift me up and stand between my legs.

I wrapped them around him and placed both hands on his shoulders now, smiling at him.

Even with me sitting on the counter, he was still taller than me and had to tilt his head to look into my eyes.

As much as I wanted to tell him what my thoughts were, I couldn’t.

Not because I didn’t want to.

“Please don’t make me do this,” I whispered, looking at his lips and then letting my gaze drop to his chest where my fingers started to pick at his shirt.

“Make you do what, Rooney?”

His voice was low and raspy, and of course it had to sound so damn sexy.

“Tell you what I feel or think. I’m not good at it, and I don’t wanna mess things up.”

I was scared to rush things.

As much as he showed me that he wanted me too, I couldn’t be the first to open up about my feelings to him.

I was too afraid to get hurt, even if I knew that was part of seeing someone.

Just because things seemed to go well between us, that didn’t mean we would end up together.

“Then show me how you feel in a different way,” he suggested.

My eyes were back on his.

Maybe if we keep things to ourselves, we’d have more time to think about it all.

Who are you fooling, stupid girl?

But as always, speaking from the heart was never my strength, and I knew I’d sooner or later regret not opening up to him in that very moment.
