When it’s time to talk about addiction, you can sense the fear and trepidation in the room. Many are simply scared that it really is all their fault. Some get told this either directly or indirectly, while others just reach this conclusion on their own. To best meet the unique learning style of the children in group, it is critical to utilize a variety of tools to shed light on this disease. I always prefer a combination of stories, film, art, and games. The real magic in the process for kids is being in a room with others who are going through the same things—similar problems, worries, and feelings. Here youngsters may finally realize that they are not alone.

I’ve made numerous references to the Addiction game throughout this book. The Addiction game, unlike any other activity I’ve used, teaches children in powerful ways. Here you take the abstract concept of the disease process and make it very concrete by personifying addiction. A facilitator role-plays the disease so kids can hear it, watch it, react to it, and have feelings about it. Youngsters get to hear Addiction tell all the lies and set the trap to take control of the addicted person’s life. Here, kids experience a powerful visual as they come to separate the person they love from the disease that consumes them. Slowly they understand that it’s not their fault, and they also begin to develop ways to avoid this trap as they get older.
