A New Architecture
"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

While in college, I lived next door to several architects and befriended them. The most well-mannered thing I can say is that I found them to be a rather eclectic bunch. But I carefully listened to their philosophy of artfully blended form and function and grew to respect and admire it greatly. I learned from them things I have never forgotten. And as I have visited city after city around the world, I have seen their craft unfold and impress itself on skyline after skyline.
If you ask a billionaire captain of business how he wishes his skyscraper to be built, it is a certainty that he will not respond that he does not care. I would be willing to wager that not one CEO would reply that they just want a stack of cubes so they can fill it with workers to make them even more money. But I am fairly certain that each of them would want to leave a legacy of beautiful form as well as function to bear their name.
It is buried somewhere deep in the human psyche to want to fuse the beauty of form with the sheer power of function. The movie hero can dress up in a ragged goat skin and go out to defeat the enemy with a club. But more often, in successful movies, the hero will appear onscreen in gleaming armor and cut his enemies to pieces with his beautifully appointed sword.
Does it really matter if the undersea living structure looks spectacular or does it simply matter that is a safe haven? The question is, “Do we want it pretty or do we want it to work?” The answer is, emphatically, “Both!”
If I really have to stand toe to toe with a reasonably intelligent person and justify beauty of form fused to the power of function, then I am wasting my breath. For those who cannot and do not understand this concept, no amount of tutoring will ever make a difference anyway. Sadly, I have had this unenviable task before and have found that no amount of reasoning will ever convince such mindsets otherwise.
If we look back at undersea habitat architecture, it is certain that most of these structures were designed with little thought for form. This was mainly due to cost limitations. Some of it was, unfortunately, a result of little or no imaginative thought. There was
