Shea didn’t believe she’d just witnessed her brother’s death. Her heart refused to believe it.

Granted her line of sight had been poor, a combination of venue and distance. And while she’d witnessed her share of brutality and killing, it still shocked her system. Somehow she’d managed to keep her voice calm while advising Hardy they needed to return to the house. As an agent she understood the necessity of advising superiors of developments as soon as possible. Even through her distress she could admit it still chapped her butt that he’d be the one making the call to update the situation and discuss future strategy.

Then again she’d never before been so personally invested in an event while undercover.

All these years, she thought and resisted the urge to rock against the cold nerves tap-dancing along her skin, she’d lived in fear of confronting her brother. A part of her, the sentimental sister part, had never really believed it would happen.

The trained agent had accepted, so she’d believed, it was just a matter of time.

When Hardy parked inside the garage, she took a careful breath before she opened her door and stepped out of the SUV. Taking it slow she felt bolstered when her legs held and she made her way into the kitchen.

“Would you rather I not listen in on your call?” she asked, unsure what she wanted him to answer. She gauged she had just enough control left to manage a status update before she would need to escape into the privacy of a shower. She lifted a brow when Hardy swore. Then, she felt the breath crushed out of her when he swept her into his arms.

“Lean on me,” he murmured as he brushed his lips, so gently, over hers.

And just like that, she wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned into him.

Whenever Shea had thought about being with Hardy – and God knew she’d thought about it more than she was comfortable admitting – she’d imagined they’d tear at one another, desperate to set off the explosion of desire. To burn away this incessant throbbing need. It’s what she’d thought she wanted. Now, however, he opened the door to a new world of sensation.

He cradled her in his arms as if she was precious, caressed his mouth over hers, across her cheek, down the line of her jaw, with gentleness. Tenderness darkened his eyes. Passion did as well. The combination had her heart tripping in her chest.

It’s just sex, she maintained as he lowered her to the bed. As he stretched out beside her, his hands running up and down her spine, over her hip. As his mouth continued the soft journey over her face, down to nip at her throat. As his body pressed close to hers.

She didn’t care that her shaky frame of mind had been the catalyst. She just wanted to lose herself in the warmth and luxury of touch, taste, and pleasure.

“I’ve wanted you since you arrived,” he whispered. “Staring at me through that truck windshield, pissed off and demanding answers.
