“I got you a double,” Ross announced as he placed steaming coffees on the table and then sat on the sofa next to Kyle. All around the hotel were carefully placed sofas with tables, quiet corners where you could sit and talk and let the world go by. He half turned to face Kyle and pulled his leg up between them, bent at the knee. “I saw Paul go into his room, and I also sent off a quick email to Lorna.”

“You think it’s serious?”

“I think I had to make a judgment call on placing Lorna with that client. We’re short on—” Ross looked around them, but they really were in a deserted corner under stairs that curved up over them. “—operatives,” he finished in a quieter voice. “Especially now that Adam is six months in the US, and with Adam committed to touring with Logan for the next few months.”

“So, the first thing we need to do when we get back is set up interviews.”

“Like I said, I shortlisted. A couple of superb ones. I emailed you the two I think you should question.”

Inheriting the manor house and setting up Bodyguards Inc. had been a sudden change in Kyle’s life. He’d tried to run it himself for a good few years, but until Ross had joined the company, they’d never managed to gel as a business.

“You’re important to BI,” Kyle said. He was aware it was an abrupt thing to throw out in conversation, and he couldn’t fail to see the surprise on Ross’s face. “We should give you a raise.”

Ross frowned. “Not that I’d say no. I mean, who would say no to more money, apart from you, but you’re loaded. Sorry, lost my train of thought….” He blinked at Kyle for a moment, evidently having entirely lost his focus. “What did I do to deserve that?”

Kyle shifted uncomfortably on the sofa and delayed his answer by sipping at the hot, bitter coffee. But he couldn’t actually avoid the question.

“Without you, BI would be a mess. You organize us, you research for us, you use connections you have made. You’re indispensable.”

And that is why I won’t act on how I feel. Kyle knew this was a weak excuse to tell himself. This wasn’t some misunderstanding keeping them apart, this was him scared to death that Ross would hate him for how he felt, then walk. It wouldn’t be BI that was lost without Ross, it would be Kyle.

“Thank you.” Ross smiled that gorgeous smile of his that lightened his hazel eyes.

“I was considering a change at BI, of me being out on the road a bit, taking on a couple of cases to keep my hand in.”

Ross nodded. The smile disappeared, and instead Ross quirked his mouth with a downturn of disappointment, but he didn’t show it in his words. “Okay, if you think that is what you want to do.”

“It would help your scheduling if you have someone in as a pinch hitter, and I’m sick of being stuck in the office.
