She had given up trying to sort from the chair. Dhari sat on the floor in front of a now empty desk with piles of its contents all around her. The three small boxes she’d picked up at the grocery store were already full. Why did I think this would be easy? Her vow to skim and not read broke down soon after unused stationary and supplies had been boxed. She must have kept every card anyone ever sent her. And letters—no one writes like this anymore. You just pick up the phone.
“Oh, shit!” Dhari scrambled to her feet. “Jamie!” She ran up the stairs, grabbed the phone from her bag, and dialed Jamie’s number. “Damn,” she said after the fourth ring, “please answer.”
“Hello.”
“I’m sorry, honey, I really am. I meant to call last night, but I got in so late and just fell asleep.”
“A good time, then?”
“I met Erin Hughes, the woman who’s helping my realtor, for dinner and then she showed me around the town.”
“Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“Yes, there is,” Dhari replied. Then, after a pause, she added, “I miss you. I wish you had taken a couple of vacation days and come down with me.”
“Find a fun place to go and maybe I’ll come down later in the week. My nephew’s birthday is tomorrow; he’ll be eight. Can’t miss that,” she said, then added with a chuckle, “Or the chance to send my sister into therapy.”
“Just behave, Jamie. Don’t give your sister reasons to believe that your father is right. Besides, eight years old, he’s old enough to realize that something’s going on beneath the surface.”
“I’ll be careful. He loves his Aunt Jame; I won’t do anything to jeopardize that. But, I’m not going to let his parents jeopardize it, either.”
The sound of an engine and crunching gravel took Dhari to the front bedroom window. The Ram was nearing the top of the drive. Dhari checked the time. Erin was early.
“Well, don’t concentrate so hard on pushing your sister’s buttons that you can’t enjoy your nephew,” she said, halfway down the stairs.
“That’s just it—enjoying him is pushing her buttons. I can’t miss,” she said, adding another chuckle.
Dhari opened the door and motioned Erin in the front. Pip was a silent blur, racing toward the side of the house after a squirrel as big as she. “Uh, huh,” she said, with a smile directed at Erin.
“A visit long enough to eat a piece of cake, give him a present and pat on the head,” Jamie was saying, “and leave before Dan gets home, is PC and barely within her tolerance.”
“She has to know that’s not going to happen.” Dhari pointed toward the living room and followed Erin in. She touched Erin’s arm and nodded toward her morning’s efforts displayed on the floor.
“. . . on my way to find the computer games he wants,” Jamie continued, “so that he can spend hours teaching me to play them. And eventually letting little brother play, not having
