Chapter Eleven

Day 6

Cam was nude, stretched out in the pool under the waterfall. Even though she hadn’t been sweating and working as hard as Skyler, that didn’t mean after six days she didn’t feel gross and in need of a good scrub. The waterfall was refreshing, and sleeping indoors had helped her knee heal some.

Looking down at her skin, she gasped at the large bruises that crossed along her chest from the harness, a painted reminder of the unfortunate events with the plane. For the umpteenth time, she thought back to the landing, finally concluding there wasn’t much else she could have done. They were alive, had a water source and a limited food selection, though the food itself was in abundance. They sure weren’t going to get scurvy anytime soon, but what she wouldn’t do for a nice portobello burger. Her mouth filled with saliva just thinking of the hearty food. “Mmm, onions,” she mumbled as she let the waterfall cascade over her head.

There was something cleansing about bathing in a pool that held a waterfall. The water wasn’t stagnant, the falls kept most bugs away, and there was a panoramic view of breathtaking mountains. The weather today was slightly warmer and Cam soon found herself floating towards the middle of the pool and smiled at the serene feeling. If they were going to land in the ocean and get blown to this island, well, it wasn’t the worst place to be stuck or with the worst company.

Her mind turned to Skyler. Cam felt herself getting closer to her, and the thought made her heart skip, although not in a bad way. It was more like it was unchartered territory, and her heart didn’t know how to act, torn between wanting to give her flowers and running away to protect herself from future pain. But where could she run to on an island? And was that really what she wanted? No, if she was frank, what she wanted was to run into Skyler’s arms and never let go. To protect and be protected. She slammed the door on her heart. “She doesn’t even live here, doofus. Don’t, just don’t,” she murmured to the empty area around her.

She opened her eyes, and any thoughts about Skyler tumbled into the pool when her eyes landed on three deer grazing not six feet from where she was. One of them looked at her with its ears tilted forward before crossing her off as non-threatening and continued eating.

Goose’s bark pulled a groan as Cam saw him shoot from behind and bound towards the lovely creatures. “Goose, no, stop!” Skyler shouted from behind her.

Cam turned around before sinking further into the area, trying to cover as much as possible with the water.

“Sorry about that. Did you see those deer? I’m so glad I had my camera.” Skyler’s face lit up the dusk air around them. “Crap, I’m sorry.” Skyler’s ponytail whipped across her face as she quickly turned.

“It’s okay. I was just finishing up.” Cam debated the best course of action.
