Chapter Fifteen

Venturing Out of Your Comfort Zone

“Paris, I know you probably hate me, and you have every right to. I don’t know what came over me. I just wanted to see you. You won’t talk to me. You keep blowing me off like I’m a nobody. I just wanted you to listen to me. I wasn’t trying to disrespect you. I can’t imagine why you’d think that, sweetheart. Paris, you know I love you. I want to marry you. That’s right, sweetheart. Why don’t we just get married? You know that’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’ve just been trying to show you how wonderful it would be if the two of us were together. I know you can’t imagine it, but trust me. I would take care of you for the rest of my life, the rest of your life. Just let me prove it to you, Paris. The world would be yours. It’s not right for you to be doing that for every man that comes in that club. You’re too…”

Beep.

Grey’s persistent whining prattled on, disregarding the beep signaling the answering machine cutting off. Paris shook her head in disbelief. Grey was completely sickening to her now. She couldn’t believe she’d actually enjoyed being with him at one time. Her answering machine switched to message number four, and she wasn’t surprised to hear Grey’s anguished voice pick up where he’d left off.

“Baby just let me explain. I can’t tell you how sorry I am. I’m so sorry, Paris. Don’t hate me. I didn’t know what else to do. You left me no choice. I don’t know why you’re doing this to me. I just need to talk to you. Call me. Please, Paris, just call me and let me apologize to you. I’ll try you again later,” he sniffled.

Paris quickly pressed delete then retrieve to get the next message. She felt a warm flush as Ivan’s voice filled the room. He was just calling to see how she was doing. It had been a while since he had heard from her, and he and Sharp were getting worried. Paris pursed her lips at the recorder. Ivan knew good and well Sharp hadn’t said he was worried about her. Although she knew Sharp loved her, he wasn’t apt to show emotion to anyone. Actually, Paris had always thought she and Sharp had that in common.

Ivan was always telling her and Deanne that he loved them, but Paris could count the times on her fingers that she had ever uttered those words without Ivan or Deanne’s prompting. Growing up, Sharp and Paris had dealt with their poverty and the rejection from their father by internalizing much of their hurt and disappointment. Ivan, on the other hand, always wanted to talk about everything. He had even told Paris that he forgave Richard for “doing whatever it was he had to do.”

“Don’t you ever just want to sit down with him and ask him why?” Ivan would muse aloud. “He must’ve had a reason.
