Chapter 18

“Planning Pride”

It would be their second date, Kurt said. It would vindicate his lukewarm response when asked about Pride. It would be safely in the gayborhood, where they could hug or hold hands or even, gasp, kiss, if they wanted.

And when Paul arrived, he was glad that he came.

It would be a big gay night out, because that was what the annual ‘Planning Pride’ meeting was about, so everyone in town was there. Of course, the real planning had long since happened. And had been implemented.

This was a way to make sure that people too lazy to include themselves felt included. Actually planning Pride was a thankless job – like being on an HOA that leaves everything up to you but then complains about the way you do it.

Tonight, would be more like an awards show. A pre-party.

All the clubs were open, and there would be a countdown to welcome Pride month.

Tina’s was open, but arranged differently.

Paul parked and walked, smiling to himself. He was certainly more comfortable here now, than he’d been the night he first stepped around here. Plus, if he played his cards right, who knows… maybe he’d even get lucky.

He liked Kurt.

Quick.

Funny.

A little reckless in places like Vance.

But still.

Kurt was dressed well – which involved not trying to dress too young, or too spectacularly. Something low key. Something that showed a little of his body, which promised lean strength.

He smiled broadly when he saw Paul. He’d been leaning against a railing, watching the traffic walk this way and that.

Paul decided he’d better not be too coy, so when Kurt gave him a hug, he made sure it was a quick one, but a close one, and then he took Kurt’s hand and he led him around the corner.

“Let me show you something.”

He went to the side gate at Tina’s, and opened it. It was where trash was kept, and Kurt wrinkled his nose. But then Paul pushed the large plastic dustbin out of the way, and started climbing the ladder.

Kurt smiled and followed.

The roof of Tina’s looked out over the bustle of Loveday on a Friday night. And not just any Friday night, but Pride Eve.

The streets had the same festive mood it usually had around Christmas time, except the theme included dildoes instead of candles. And Trans Pride and Bear Pride and Bi Pride flags and Rainbow flags everywhere. Even a Queer confederate flag and an Old Glory with rainbow stripes was visible.

“Wow! What a view!” Kurt stood right next to Paul, snuggling up.

“Yeah. Used to come up here as a kid, sometimes. When I didn’t have enough time to make it to the woods and back. Some nights I’d lie here and watch the stars.”

“You know, I have an mpeg that starts this way.”

Paul chuckled. Then he reached around Kurt’s waist and held him as they watched the fanfare below. When their skin touched, Paul could feel his heart racing.

Kurt’s hand went to Paul’s jeans back pocket.

They stood there watching and for about a minute they shared a silence in which everything was perfect.
