Okay. He might have been mistaken, looking so hard for Darius that he believed he’d seen him in the distance when he hadn’t.

But in any case, Oren intended to be damn careful, keep watching even more.

The figure he’d seen had been across the street from the fenced playground, standing behind a parked car. He’d appeared to be looking toward the school and the students—and Oren. But he hadn’t remained there after leveling a glare in the marshal’s direction.

Oren didn’t believe he had imagined it. He was hardly an imaginative person. Still, he’d been carefully attempting to scrutinize their surroundings in case Darius was around, and maybe he’d seen characteristics in that guy that actually weren’t there. It could have just been a local resident, or even a parent, glancing at the school for no inappropriate reason.

He kept up his inspection of the area for the rest of Madison’s school day, also watching when any of her students left her presence. He accompanied the aide often when she walked a kid to the nearby restroom.

He sort of enjoyed himself. He hadn’t thought it would be fun to hear the enthusiastic, high voices of kindergarteners as they got excited when Madison praised them for achieving something, like reading a word or counting some pictures.

He’d thought now and then about having kids of his own. Rather liked the idea. But so far all the relationships he’d begun had gone bad so he couldn’t count on it.

He definitely wasn’t going to ponder what it would be like to marry Madison and have kids with her. Sure, this kindergarten teacher would be a good mom.

And right now, he was also uneasy.

Not just because he thought he might have seen Darius around here, in this environment where peace should reign, but also because he hadn’t been able to verify it.

Or even go look for his target.

Darius, or whoever he’d seen, had been too far away and had quickly disappeared from his vision. Too quickly. Going after him would have been futile.

Staying here, keeping a protective eye on Madison and everyone around her made more sense.

But that uneasiness...

He was glad when her school day drew to an end, several hours after her students had gone. She’d had a couple of meetings with other teachers, touched base with Principal Nelson once more and spent time on her computer, evaluating kids and planning lessons for the rest of the week. Or that’s what she’d told him.

But finally, around five fifteen, she stood up from her desk in the classroom and started walking toward him. Oren had just taken his most recent patrol around both the interior and the exterior of the school.

Now Madison said, “I’m going to close things down in about five minutes. Are you about ready to leave?”

“Sure,” he said. And was he ever.

He knew that Madison had made arrangements to have her sister show up at Bubbe’s with their mother and meet their brother there around six o’clock. Oren recognized he might find it enjoyable to watch those Coltons together over dinner.
