Chapter 7

Kinzie’s re-entry into Paris was easily accomplished. Charlotte Duval, her friend at the embassy, met her at Customs to allow her to pass through without a hitch.

“How did you lose your passport?” asked Char, a tall striking woman a bit older than Kinzie whose black hair had the most amazing silver streak in it.

“To make a long story short, my twin sister and I were in a terrible accident.”

“Oh my God. Is Kayla okay?”

The question hit Kinzie with the force of a semi-truck. “No, Kayla was killed.”

“Kinzie, I am so sorry.” Her genuine concern warmed Kinzie’s heart.

“Thanks. When they found us there was a mix up and I was mistakenly identified as her and flown on a medical transport back to California.”

Char nodded. “Thus, why you don’t have your passport. I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling.”

Choking back a sob, Kinzie said, “No, you can’t, but I appreciate that you care.”

The enormity of what had transpired since Char had dropped her off at the airport to meet Kayla and Evan for their trip a few weeks back pressed down on her with an almost unbearable weight. That fateful day seemed like a lifetime ago, and the only people she could talk to about it were over five thousand miles away. Her thoughts flashed to Damian. Even with this much distance between them her internal organs felt like someone had wrapped his or her hand around them and squeezed. At times, she could barely breathe.

Char dropped her off at the end of her street in the Rue Montorgueil, a bustling neighborhood with one of the oldest open-air markets in Paris as well as restaurants, cafés, and wine and cheese shops with just about everything within walking distance. She grabbed a coffee and headed to her flat on the second floor.

Entering her studio, Kinzie laughed. It was interesting how experience changed your perception. When she’d left her home to meet Kayla in Florence, she’d been the envy of her friends—a sexy Parisian boyfriend—even if he wasn’t all that he appeared to be, a large studio apartment in a chic neighborhood, and a fun job that allowed her to set her own schedule. All and all, it was the perfect life. But standing just inside her front door, she realized how tiny the flat was. She wasn’t convinced that the bath and walk-in closet alone in Damian’s suite wasn’t a bit bigger.

Her landline rang. “Bonjour,” she answered as she slipped off her flip flops.

“Kinzie, it’s Franc. I just spoke to Char. She told me about Kayla. I’m so sorry, darling. I’ll take the afternoon off—”

“No, Franc. I’m fine. I think I need some time alone,” she said, biting back a sob.

“Are you sure?”

“I am, but thank you for calling.”

Kinzie waited, hoping Franc might insist… might make her feel as though she was important to him. But then, if she was honest, other than a good lay when she needed it, he wasn’t vitally important to her either. She had to admit, their intimate detachment was equal on both sides.
