Chapter 11
By the end of January Abby was back at work. She met with her fatherâs construction crew and set the date for construction to begin on the Rubaker house. If she could pull this off, it would expand her business and do wonders for advertising. At Masonâs suggestion she had hired an assistant. Because her first chemo session was scheduled for next week, she would need the extra help around the office. Melanie was her name and she would be on hand should there be any questions from the construction crew or the realtors in Abbyâs absence. This was an important job; she couldnât afford any mistakes due to her illness.
Her intention was to continue working throughout the treatment. Chemo sessions would be scheduled for Friday afternoons to allow the weekend to serve as recuperation time. God willing, those two days would be enough time to get it together before work on Monday.
Last week Tammy had gone to a support group with her. Abby found it to be comforting and very informative. Although most of the women were in remission, their experiences were interesting and kept her encouraged. Abby understood now more than ever the importance of early detection. She would forever encourage the women she knew to have regular mammogram screenings and to perform daily self-examinations.
That evening she and Mason planned to attend a seminar which would discuss the side effects of chemo. It was comforting to have Mason around, although she didnât want to get too used to it. She was still leery about what the future held for them. Mason and Nell had kept up their daily visits, and just last week, Abby and Nell had spent the whole day together while Melissa had gone to pre-school. Abby was falling in love with the little girl, which made her even more anxious about the future.
Mason picked her up at the shop at five. He smelled wonderful and looked scrumptious. She ached to kiss him, for him to touch her, hold herâ¦
âHow did things go today?â he asked when she was seated beside him in the car.
She snapped her seatbelt into place. âGreat. Theyâre starting the deck on Friday. Iâm really excited.â
âAs you should be, the design is good and once you add your decorating touches, itâll be great. I heard theyâre thinking about selling it furnished.â
âReally? That would be great! Iâll have to take extra special care in selecting the furnishings then.â
He could see the joy in her eyes. She really loved her work and he was proud of her.
âI think I have two other doctors interested in going into a practice with me. We might be able to get it off the ground by the end of the year if everybody is as serious as I am.â
âThatâs good. What types of medicine do they practice?â His new practice was important to her. She was praying for it to work. This would secure his staying in Manchester. And this new office meant a lot to him, she could tell by the way his face lit up when he talked about it.
