By the time I got back to the Edwardses’s, showered off the stain of grease from my hair, and reapplied my makeup, I’d completely forgotten about my encounter with Kate. I looked forward to a night of fun. A night to leave behind my problems.

Kenna, Fynn, Josie, and I rode in Brock’s SUV to the Devil’s Drop, a local stretch of road full of sudden twists and turns, but what made the Devil’s Drop the highest accident spot in Elmwood was the bridge connecting the cliffs, Burnout Bridge. If a driver lost control of his car and hit the guardrails, depending on conditions and speed, there was a good chance he would go over the edge, the car tumbling into the icy river below. It was likely the fall killed the passengers, but if they managed to survive, the river took them.

Like what happened to Sawyer, Grayson’s brother. He had lost control of his car on Burnout Bridge, spun into the railing, and gone over. I remembered reading about his death in the paper, but then it had little impact on my life, other than thinking he was too young to die.

It still bewildered me how much Grayson enjoyed the thrill of racing, a high he seemed to constantly chase.

“Is this a good idea?” I asked as we pulled into a parking lot stuffed with cars. I couldn’t be the only one worried about Grayson driving tonight.

Fynn sat on one side of me in the back seat and Kenna on my other. His long legs touched the back of the seat in front of him, knees creeping into my personal space, but I didn’t mind. Fynn Dupree had a comforting presence about him, a less scary persona than Brock, but that wasn’t to say Fynn wasn’t dangerous. He gave off big brother vibes. Fynn glanced out the window, looking up at the night sky. Only a sliver of moonlight cast through the darkness. “The roads are clear. If there’s ever a night to race, tonight’s an optimal night.”

The parking lot was like a damn car show when we pulled in, boasting some of the most expensive rides in the country, but it wasn’t just the make and models that gave them a hefty price tag. It was also what was under the hood, the aftermarket parts, the flashy paint jobs, the booming stereos, and the tires and rims for starters. Some of these cars cost more than my college tuition, and my brain couldn’t fathom why anyone would spend so much money on a hobby.

One of the reasons Grayson and I would never work.

I didn’t understand him. The need for escape I could relate to but not the frivolous spending.

Brock rolled his SUV next to Micah’s parked Hummer. The cars were all sporadically arranged around the lot. Some on an angle. Some bumper to bumper. Others in a row. It was chaos but in the best possible party way. People were already drinking, sitting on lawn chairs or on the trunk of cars.
