CHAPTER 15

“What happened here?” Naomi finally found her voice just as the elevator doors shut out the scene of complete mayhem outside.

“Kata’s gangster friends turned up,” I replied, looking at Kata with a grim expression.

The usually stern man lost some of his composure as his face visibly paled. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

“There will be a slight delay for you girls tonight. Cops are going to be all over the place. There’s nothing to worry about. The threat is over. But you better head back into the restaurant and wait a few minutes,” I said in as soothing a voice I could manage under the circumstances, looking at Naomi and the other girl in turn.

They simply nodded. Their eyes were filled with questions, but they instinctively understood it wasn’t the right time to ask them.

When the doors opened, I stood between Kata and the others, and gestured with a sweep of my arm to indicate they should walk out. Kata understood he wasn’t going anywhere—he didn’t make any attempt to get out.

“We’ll go down and have a little chat. Back in ten minutes. Don’t worry,” I said to Naomi.

She nodded, her expressive eyes still looking unsure as hell. I pressed the button for the seventh floor. Ten seconds later, Kata and I stood alone on the deserted floor.

“You and I are going to have a chat. But before we do, I want you to understand something. The people I was with today, the ones who got attacked in the parking garage by hitmen armed with automatics, they are family to me,” I said, lifting my finger to keep him quiet when I saw him opening his mouth.

“People who come after my family… I have a reputation for breaking them with my hands. Let me know if you think I’m bluffing.”

Kata stood transfixed, not being able to do anything except shake his head.

“You’re doubly screwed. It’s not just me you have to deal with. There’s a dead body downstairs and three men on the brink of dying. That attack on federal agents happened based on your phone call. That makes you complicit with those gangsters. That means prison time, not just a slap on the wrist. You’ve messed up big time. Get it?”

“Yes,” he barely managed to whisper.

I could see beads of sweat forming on his brow.

“I’m the only one standing between you and prison. If you come clean, I might decide not to ask the cops to book you. Because if I do, no lawyer will be able to save you from prison time for a deadly assault on federal agents. Get it?”

“Yes. I will tell you everything. I had no idea. I’m very sorry,” he said, bowing as he apologized.

I was a little surprised by Kata’s apology. The look on his face told me he realized he had messed up big time. And he looked sincerely regretful. I had expected him to put up some resistance. But I kept up the pressure.

“Who did you call tonight
