This, right here, I could get used to.
Emery
W hen the bed moved again, I couldnât help but groan. Glaring at the clock, I saw it was almost five in the morning and way too early to start the day.
Turning my body to face Enzo, I found him leaning against the headboard, one knee bent and a look of pain on his face.
âWhatâs wrong?â I was now instantly awake. So much for going back to sleep.
âNothing.â The word was gritted out.
âDonât lie to me, Enzo.â I pushed myself to sit up too, then leaned against his side. Almost right away, one arm snaked around me to pull us closer.
âIâll be fine. Donât worry.â Then, he moved his hurt knee, crying out quietly. âOkay. Fine. Maybe not. The stupid thing feels like itâs on fire.â
âCan I look?â I moved to turn on the bedside lamp. I got a grunt, which I took as an okay.
Pulling up his pant leg as gently as I could, and ignoring the hiss of pain, I ground my teeth together to keep my own surprised cry from escaping.
His entire knee was red, splotchy, and, I assumed, infected.
âWhy didnât you say anything sooner?â I asked harshly.
âItâsâ¦what Iâm used to doing, Em. I didnât want to wake you, either. Itâll be fine.â
It didnât look like it.
âIâve had worse.â
Be that as it may, I wasnât going to chance it. Not now, that was for sure.
âIâll be back.â
Enzo grabbed my arm before I was able to get off the bed.
âPlease. Donât tell him. Just⦠I donât know.â He threw his head back, letting it thunk against the headboard.
âIâll get you an ice pack.â
After a moment, he let go, breathing in deeply. A bead of sweat coated his hairline, dripping down his face.
Enzo was far from okay.
In the kitchen, I wasnât the least bit surprised to find Ryker, staring into his mug of coffee. When he heard me, his eyes rose to meet mine. They were still red, if not redder then the day before.
âMorning.â The word was rough.
âEnzoâs knee is bad.â I rushed the words out, hating that fact that I was going against his wishes.
âOkay.â He stood, then got the bottle of Advil down, and he was gone before I could even get the ice pack from the freezer.
Was Ryker mad at me? Did he regret taking Enzo in?
Sniffing to keep my tears at bay, I did everything I could to push it out of my mind. Iâd figure it out later. Right now, Enzo was the priority.
Back in the bedroom, Enzo was glaring at Ryker. His gaze didnât change as his eyes fell on me. I felt smoke billowing from my ears at the look alone.
âSorry,â I squeaked, freezing at the end of the bed.
âIt is okay if touch your knee?â Ryker asked after Enzo took the pills and water bottle.
âLike my answer matters.â He turned his head away from the both of us.
âIt does matter. I can have an on-call doctor make a house visit instead to check it out.
