The morning passed slowly. I showered and made a large brunch in case anyone else was hungry, but Maria didn't wake up and Baylor never came inside from guard duty. I did hear him on the side of the house, shortly after I had gotten out of the shower, calling all of his patients for the rest of the week and rescheduling them for next week.

Hopefully, I thought, this ordeal wouldn't last that long. I didn't think I could take that level of tension and anxiety day in and day out for days on end...

I tried to think of things I'd want for my “dream wedding” wedding, but I couldn't come up with much, other than 'small'. How many people did Baylor and I actually know, anyway? Not many, and of those we did know, who would really show up? Maria, obviously, and the Blevins’ would make the trip. Nani and Carl, and maybe my cousins and their families. My dad would come, but I'm sure my mother wouldn't. She might call a week or two after and ask me how it went and then talk about herself and Jacques and Paris for an hour.

All my list said after hours of absent-minded web surfing was:

Small

View of mountains

Giant wildflower bouquets

Italian Food? Tiramisu wedding cake?

Lots of wine!

Maybe a wine fountain!

Most of the time was spent looking at dresses, which made me cringe, because I wasn't really a dress kind of girl. And I especially despised lace. It was hard to find anything in the typical 'wedding dress' category that looked even remotely comfortable and didn't have lace, or poofy stuff, or sparkly crap, or weird flowers all over it.

I was just about to make a late lunch and use the now tepid leftover coffee in the pot for an iced cafe au lait when Baylor came bursting through the back door, into the dining room.

Before he could even call her name, his mother had rushed out from the guest bedroom, sensing his distress.

“We have to go,” Baylor said, gasping for air as if he'd just run a marathon.

“What's going on?” I asked, frozen in between them in the kitchen with a cup of ice in one hand and the coffee pot in the other, looking back and forth from his face to hers, waiting for someone to answer.

“An attack, in town,” Baylor said through winded breaths.

“In Hunter?” I asked in shock.

“Where?” Maria asked.

“My office,” Baylor answered, gravely. “The sheriff just called me and said an ambulance from Alpine County is already on their way—apparently one of my patients didn't get my message about rescheduling today, showed up, and was attacked by a hooded stranger while waiting in the parking lot.”

My heart pounded, and my blood boiled in panic. It was closer to home faster than I thought.

“This person is really trying to call you out,” Maria stated.

“Well, we have to stop them before they hurt anymore people,” Baylor replied, his voice full of anger and urgency.

“Do you need to go check on your patient?” I asked.
