Chapter Nine

Alexis was about ready to climb the walls of the spacious suite provided by her two rich husbands. She’d been the one who didn’t want to go out, but rather hang out in the room, all the time watching movies and television while ordering room service.

And that’s what she’d done all day. She should be grateful she wasn’t panhandling on the streets with no cash to her name for food or shelter. Poor, pitiful her for living it up in a penthouse suite. But there was something powerful about wanting to stay inside versus being forced by circumstance to stay inside in order to avoid a worldwide conspiracy of paparazzi via the viewing public.

Jackson and Derek were in meetings all day without a break. But they promised to sneak her out for dinner someplace later. And then tomorrow they had an early-morning flight back to Colorado to meet with some important investors on a neighboring ranch development deal.

They’d invited her to go with them, but she declined. Her flight back to North Carolina was already purchased. She didn’t want to take their money, but they’d insisted. She privately vowed to pay them back.

There was a part of her that longed to see where they lived. Growing up in the Midwest, she’d been to Colorado only once to visit Pikes Peak on a spring break trip. She’d loved the mountain views.

Her career had put her out East. And she liked where she was. Didn’t she?

Yes. She did.

Alexis knew it would be all too easy to chuck her career and head for Colorado, but she wasn’t that woman. She wasn’t the sort of girl that gave up everything for a man, let alone two.

Although these two men were exceptional specimens. They were both just so perfect, she knew if she wasn’t careful, she’d let them talk her into changing her dream life to one of their construction.

An annoying stalker had sent her on the run. That was bad enough. Giving up the job and everything she’d worked so hard for was out of the question.

She vowed to stand firm. They didn’t have to get the annulment in a hurry, but she didn’t trust herself to visit their home in Colorado. She might convince herself she didn’t want to leave them. Did she really want her life back?

The door to the suite opened suddenly, and Jackson strode in like he owned the place. He had a forceful way about him that she secretly liked quite a lot. They did have a lot in common. It was a good thing they had Derek to soften their hard ways.

“What’s for dinner, honey?” he asked the moment he saw her.

She shrugged. “Depends on where you’re taking me.”

He dropped his brief case in a chair and swept her up in his arms two seconds later. “Good answer.”

Enveloped in his arms, Alexis always felt safe. She buried her face against his collar and breathed in his wonderful, masculine scent.

“I missed you all day,” he whispered in her ear.
