Did I say too much? I questioned myself, flustered.

“I can’t imagine.” She said quietly. A momentary pause settled itself around us. I cleared my throat and changed the topic.

“Have you ever been married?” My voice was gentle. Holly laughed in response.

“No, never. One day maybe, but certainly to no man.” I was surprised at the firmness in her voice.

“Not even willing to try?” I teased. She twisted back to look at me, a scowl on her features.

“Never in a million years. It could be me and one guy and no one left on earth and the human race would die out!” She declared. I laughed, enjoying her sincerity.

“If it were up to me, I think I would be the same.” I smiled. Holly slowed her pace to ride beside me.

“It is up to you.” She said. Her words both frightened and soothed me. In many ways she was wrong, and in many she was right. Diplomacy between families seemed to not be something she was aware of. Perhaps she did not come from elite beginnings.

I shook my head. “Well, yes and no. To be honest, I was raised from a young age to assume a wifely role to some man. It was all my mother spoke of, and all my father worked towards. A daughter, married well, could bring us much more stability to a weakening line.”

Holly scrunched her nose at me. “You sound as if you are speaking of kings and queens, not regular people!” I laughed again.

“We are not kings and queens! But rich people marry rich. It’s highly advised to not ruin family wealth by taking on the burden of someone less fortunate. My family had always conducted the arrangement of my marriage around this rule.”

Holly huffed. “Well, I was born into fairly meager beginnings.” She explained. “My family wasn’t particularly poor, but we certainly profited off of my championships.” I nodded. Holly paused before speaking again, her voice growing quiet.

“I did not do it for the money, though that was certainly favorable. With my winnings, I will be set for a long, long while. It was about finding that moment where time and gravity ceased to exist in the saddle.” She looked down at her leg.

“I can still find it, but not without compromise. Not without enduring pain.” She smiled wistfully.

“It’s why I came here. I knew that was over for me, but if I can even train one person to find that serenity long after I am gone, I will be at peace.”

I was surprised by her honesty.

“It isn’t over for you.” I stated. She looked at me, amused. “That moment in time, that single experience of bliss- it’s out there. Maybe in another form, maybe in another way. What you found in the saddle can be found in other corners of the earth.” I chose my words carefully. I believed them.

It seemed to strike Holly, whose amused expression turned thoughtful.

“I had never thought of it that way.” She explained, hope building in her eyes. I looked beyond her to see the ranch in the distance, looming before me angrily.
