CHAPTER 13

MIA

I knelt by Bella, my hands soaked with her blood. My shoulders shook and tears streamed down my face as I tried to staunch the flow of thick red liquid oozing from the wound just over the dog’s shoulder. Bella’s breathing was labored, those soulful brown eyes staring up at me imploringly, as if she knew she wasn’t going to make it.

A sob bubbled up my throat, fueled by anger and heartache. Behind me, I was dimly aware of footsteps moving closer.

“Get up.”

I shook my head. I couldn’t leave Bella here to die by herself. The German shepherd had stuck by my side for the past week while I’d healed—I wouldn’t leave her now.

“Get. Up.”

Cold metal pressed against the back of my head, and I immediately froze. I’d never had a gun pointed at me before, but I instinctively knew that’s what I felt. My body acted out of instinct, my hands lifting as I sat back on my heels. Slowly, I climbed to my feet and turned to face him.

The gun was even scarier up close. He’d backed up a few feet, but my heart raced as I stared down the black barrel, terrified to look at it but even more afraid to take my eyes off it. At this range, he’d kill me for sure. I was cornered.

Think, Mia, think.

Everything I’d ever read said to make a run for it, try to fight back. But when it truly came down to it, I froze, unable to do anything. My lungs threatened to cause me to hyperventilate, shallow breaths making my chest rise and fall erratically. I barely refrained from darting a glance at the front door. Even if I tried to run, there was no way I could escape before he got off a shot. I could break for the kitchen and grab a knife, but it would be no match for the deadly pistol he held trained on me. I’d be dead before I could blink.

“Move.” He tipped his chin toward the front door.

“Where are we going?” Hope flared in my chest. If he wanted me dead, wouldn’t he just do it right here? He’d already hurt Bella. What would stop him from doing the same thing to me?

“Outside.”

“Why?” I inched my way across the room, my gaze still trained on the gun in my face. My feet felt heavy and uncoordinated as they carried me backward.

“Don’t want to kill you in here.” His mouth twisted into a sneer of disdain. “Got enough of a mess as it is.”

My heart dropped to my toes, and any hope I’d harbored fled. Still, if I could make it outside, I could try to make a break for it.

Focused on orchestrating my escape, I wasn’t paying attention and tripped over the edge of the rug. As I tried to regain my balance, my socks slid on the hardwood floor and I fell clumsily to my hands and knees.

“Goddammit!”

The barrel of the pistol connected with my face as he backhanded me, and I sucked in a sharp breath as pain exploded across my cheek.
