As is tradition in the race, on this last day, the 100 best ranked runners start 1.5 hours later, so they were just starting as I was arriving at CP1. The cool thing about this was that I was essentially in the lead group, or at least I could keep them in eye’s reach, and I was one of the first women to enter the checkpoints. There were also several family members there at CP1, and whether they knew about the second start or not, I was one of the first women that they saw, so there were lots of cheers for me. It was wonderful; I felt like they were my own family. It motivated me to make as short a stop as possible and to keep pushing on to see what I could achieve. But first I had to take care of business: fill my water bottles and take my salt tablets. As I pulled out my packet of salt tablets from my pouch, Friso, who was standing next to me, mentioned that he had lost his and asked if he could have one of mine. One, of course, would be ridiculous. He’d need about 10 for the stage alone, and since we were provided with about 100 tables, almost twice what I’d need myself, I poured a small pile out into his hand. To this he responded with a big smile, “I love you.”
