Vi spent Monday morning making phone calls, even though Jackson had told her not to. Whatever, she was already on his bad side, and since she fully planned to return to her normal life as soon as possible, she had to do a little maintenance on it in the meantime.
The first call had been to her boss, who unfortunately hadn’t become any more sympathetic to her “illness” over the weekend. You’re my go-to girl, Vi-let, he’d said in his particular nasal way, then he’d reminded her again about the Payton quarterlies and started pressing for a doctor’s note. Vi hadn’t taken that very seriously until his tone had changed just before she’d hung up. A hint of a threat had crept into his voice, and a nervous clench had started in her stomach.
Maybe she’d better ask Gideon if Severin could fake up a note for her. Steve would be a fool to fire her—she was the hardest-working accountant he had, and up until this unfortunate incident, she hadn’t taken a sick day in more than two years.
Of course, Steve had been known to be a fool.
Guilt and worry churned around in her gut at the thought of losing her job. Trying to do something to re-assert her control, she’d called her closest office friend to ask for a favor, and Lisa had promised to sniff around and see if Steve was really on the warpath.
Now she had just one more call to make, and she didn’t have much time before Jackson picked her up for another glorious day of training. And she really didn’t want to be on this call when Mr. Scowl showed up.
She frowned as she dialed and felt annoyed by the thought of Jackson. She’d had a dream about him the night before. So irking. It wasn’t enough that she had to be around him all day—now she had to have him in her head at night?
And it hadn’t even been a fun sex dream, damn it. Instead, he’d just looked at her in that way he did sometimes, all intent, as if he were seeing all the way down to her toes, and then he’d reached out and brushed her cheek with the back of his hand….
She closed her eyes and breathed for a moment, remembering. All right, maybe it had sort of been a sex dream. Whatever. It was still…annoying.
“Hello?” Robert said on the other end of the line, and Vi jerked, her eyes snapping open.
“Hi, Robert. It’s Violet. Violet Marsh. Sorry to call so early.”
There was a long beat of silence on the line, and Vi started chewing on a fingernail.
“You’re calling me?” he said at last. “I don’t really see how that fits into your plan to blow me off.”
She winced. “I’m so sorry, Robert. I swear I haven’t been trying to blow you off. My life has just…gone crazy, and I haven’t had a chance to call.”
It wasn’t exactly true—she could’ve called him immediately. But she hadn’t felt up to talking to him until she had some kind of grip on her emotions.
