PIMA THUMB POSITION

The wrist should be angled while the thumb and fingers are curled, resting on the strings. The left side of the thumb (P) sits in front of the other fingers and plucks down.

Example 1: Pluck Strings Together The correct plucking motion is to squeeze the hand into the palm. When you re-open the hand, the fingers return to their original resting position on the strings.

Avoid jerking the fingers away from the strings as you pluck. This will disorient the hand and cause you to lose spatial awareness of where the fingers are in proximity to the strings.

In examples 2 and 3 practice singing the PIMA fingerpicking pattern while you play it.
