Marsha woke up alone in Sophie’s bed, and the events of the previous night slowly came back to her. Sophie had stayed in the living room comforting Terry until Marsha’s eyes had begun to close. Marsha had come back here to sleep. Where was Sophie now?

She peeked into the living room, where Sophie snored softly on the couch. She started to walk away, then noticed Sophie’s eyes were opening.

“I didn’t mean to wake you,” Marsha said. “Go back to sleep.”

“No, it’s okay. Come sit down.” Sophie sleepily sat up, moving her legs off the couch so there was room for Marsha. “I figured I’d sleep in here last night. I just…”

Marsha guessed she’d made Sophie uncomfortable with the pass she’d made at her. And then, what incredibly bad timing. “I would’ve slept here if I’d known you wanted to be alone.”

Sophie shrugged. “You never told me how uncomfortable this couch is. My back is killing me.”

“It’s your couch. I thought you would’ve known.” She gazed at Sophie, soaking in the sight of her consummately human features. “Do we need to talk about…”

“Not right now.” Sophie went tense. “Later, maybe.”

“Okay.” Marsha couldn’t keep the disappointment out of her voice.

Sophie’s face twisted. “I just need time. I haven’t found a second to think, what with Terry and all.”

“Take your time.” Marsha tried to sound casual, but her sadness came through.

Sophie forced a smile. “Besides, you need to get to work.”

Marsha glanced at the clock. It was still early; Sophie was just trying to get rid of her. But she nodded and left the room.

She gave Sophie space for the rest of the morning. With the money Sophie had insisted on giving back to her, she went to a coffee shop alone. She had nothing to do, though, and when she got to work she found herself glad for the distraction.

Hustling around the restaurant kept her busy for the full nine hours—she even worked through her breaks. In every spare second, she still found herself thinking about Sophie, and about Terry and Gary, too.

There wasn’t much she could do about Sophie. She just had to give her time. There had to be some way to help Terry, though—something she could say to Gary to convince him the secret Terry had kept was okay. But as many times as she went over the situation in her mind, she couldn’t come up with anything. The only way for Terry to be fully honest would mean putting her own life at risk.

Even if Gary was willing to hide the presence of an illegal alien, he might not feel the same about the space variety. He might contact the government and have Marsha locked up in an army base for the rest of her life—which would be a very short life if they wanted to cut her up and examine her.

Terry really loved Gary. From what Sophie had said, he’d dated around a lot, but had never been as happy as he was now. Their relationship was so good for him.
