3. A graphic Elizabethan illustration of the process of hanging, drawing and quartering at Tyburn. The victim was usually kept alive for most of the process. One victim is recorded as sitting up and punching the executioner during the latter part of the process.

4. William de Marisco, an outlaw, was captured in 1242 on the island of Lundy, and on Henry III’s order tried, and then dragged from Westminster to be executed by being hanged, drawn and quartered. His corpse was disembowelled and his entrails burnt. His body was then quartered.
