For six years I bounced around trying to find the job. I didn’t realize that the reason I couldn’t find it was that the job didn’t exist. I submitted the Fells Point posters to design competitions and started to get some notice outside of Baltimore. It always struck me as sort of twisted that the fees associated with entering design competitions cost exponentially more than the $100 or so it cost to produce them.

Designers whose work I knew from these design annuals, like James Victore and Stephen Doyle, called me out of the blue to tell me they appreciated the work I was doing. I started getting commissions from New York publishing houses to design book covers. No one was calling me about the work I was doing from nine to five.

Near the end of that last job in Baltimore, I had become director of a small design group that was part of an ad agency. After a particularly frustrating internal meeting, I huddled with my three designers in one of the outer offices. I was in a bad place. Jody and I had just separated, and I let five years of existential angst loose. “What are we doing here? Any one of us could get hit by a car tomorrow and here we are working on these shitty projects. We’re wasting our lives.”

None of us needed that much convincing, but still, no one resigned. No one was able to actually summon enough courage to be without the steady paycheck. This problem was solved for us a week later when we were all fired; the whole operation was dissolved by the managing partner. This asshole—who will remain nameless—was the worst art director I have ever known. But I have to admit, he got it right on this one.
