SOUTHFIELDS was like any other small town in at least one respect—anything of note which happened in any part of it was quickly related elsewhere. And by noon that Sunday the cell allocated to the storage of surrendered weapons was piled high with them. Just the occasional man made it know that he was handing in his gun under protest—had been urged to do so by his wife or his boss. A few men expressed resentment at the way Frank Heller had been gunned down and the lack of interest the newly appointed lawmen were showing in tracking down the killer of Ed Heller. And a handful spoke appreciatively at the way the four potential troublemakers had been dealt with earlier in the day.

John Clements from the stage and telegraph office, Harry Pollock's dour-faced son Dave and the portly town druggist whose name was Barney Gehlen said they were prepared to be deputized—but only in an emergency. For the time being, they lodged their guns in the cell behind the law office. Leroy, the Negro jack-of-all-trades from the hotel offered his services immediately, provided he was given a gun. Despite a scowling protest from Deed, he was put on the short-list.

At midday, with the blisteringly hot air permeated with the appetizing aromas from countless cooking pots, the westbound stage rolled into town. The law office door was closed and locked and Edge and Steele watched from the stoop of the Town House as the Concord ran in off the east trail. While Charlie Deed patrolled the back streets of the American section of town and Chico Lopez attended to the needs of his customers.

From the houses came the domestic sounds of meals being prepared. And from the cantinas and the bar of the Town House other subdued noise as men drank, talked, played cards and kept movement to a minimum in the stifling interiors of the buildings.

"One of those fellers Pollock had to carry out of the cantina, Reb," Edge said from where he leaned against the hotel doorway, a smoking cigarette sloped from a corner of his mouth.

"What about him?" Steele asked from the rocker which he wasn't rocking.

"Said something about Clark would be glad to know you were dead."

"Has to mean Clark Ludlum. Kelly's boy deputy."

"Right. You figure that means Ludlum is the son of that feller you trailed all the way down from the north?"

"Could be."

There was a pause in the exchange as the stage rolled by, brakes applied, dust rising from under the wheelrims and the hooves of the four-horse team. Not too much dust, though, for the half-breed and the Virginian to see that the Concord was carrying six passengers.

"Follett, Segal and King," Edge went on, as both he and Edge shifted their eyes along narrowed sockets to watch the stage as it slowed to a halt outside the last building on the north side of Main Street. "In town to meet with Ludlum. And Kelly, it follows."

Steele nodded. "And the new bunch came to meet the others.
