Chapter Six

Ben

Waking up in my own room makes my head spin, and it’s definitely not the result of the couple of drinks I had last night. I just can’t believe what happened with Keith. I don’t even know what happened with Keith.

Well, I know what happened. I didn’t have enough drinks to forget the specifics. But I don’t know what any of it means.

Keith didn’t kick me out of his bed when we were finished, but he didn’t raise too much protest when the cramped single bed got to be too much for me and I went back to my own dorm. He was mostly asleep though. So maybe that doesn’t mean anything either.

I didn’t think I’d be worrying about the meaning of things when I started this charade with Keith. It seemed straightforward: have a chance to hang out with the guy I liked, some shared joke to get us talking, and then…well, some very elaborate and detailed fantasies, primarily, but more to the point, it was just a way to get to know him better.

But it’s made everything strange between us, taken the shape of our relationship and twisted it into something I don’t recognize, where I can’t find my footing.

Sometimes, nothing’s going on: we eat dinner together like everything’s exactly the same, talking to our friends casually, nothing more personal than handing over the salt. I guess Keith feels like our friends are saying something, like they really care, but I don’t know if they do. It’s just so casual around them compared to how Keith acts when we’re alone. When it’s just the two of us, I feel like something really could happen.

That’s what I want.

I need to drag myself to breakfast, but by the time I work myself up to it, it’s a lot later than I usually go and I only have time to snatch a bagel and practically run away with it to my first class. I don’t know who else is there and I don’t want to, I just want to hurry.

Class is more compelling than I was afraid it would be. Bio lab doesn’t just need all my attention to keep me from fucking up the experiment, it’s actually pretty interesting. I can almost forget about Keith while I’m staining slides and writing up our notes.

Jane, who’s in my lab group, corrals the rest of us, that is: me and Stan, afterward to come eat lunch and talk over our sections for the final report.

“Do we have to do it now?” Stan says as she’s ushering us out the door.

“Do you have class now?” Jane says sharply. “I’ve got shit to do later. Just spend twenty minutes working it out now with us and then we can turn it all in Thursday and be done with it.”

She looks like she might murder us if we don’t go along with it, and I actually liked this lab a lot more than some of the other ones we’ve done in this class, so I’m not going to argue with her.
