The next morning, The Bistro is buzzing with news of Matthew Duggar’s death. Even though most of our regulars never met the man, word has already gotten out that he was Paco’s former owner and that his death wasn’t accidental.

“Do you think you’ll be able to solve this one?” asks Gus Pappas. Gus owns a local plumbing company here in Whispering Bay. He’s retired, but he stays busy dividing his time between the Gray Flamingos and serving on the city council.

His girlfriend, Viola Pantini, a retired schoolteacher and seniors yoga instructor, tsks. “The whole thing is just horrible. Poor man.”

“Did you know Matthew Duggar?” I ask.

“Not really, but he attended an introductory yoga class when the community center first opened last fall. We talked for a bit, and I encouraged him to continue, but he said it just wasn’t for him. He seemed like a nice man, though.”

Matthew Duggar frequented the Whispering Bay community center? I go there religiously three times a week for Pilates. Well, twice a week at least.

Okay, I admit, I haven’t been since the first week they opened, but it’s still boggling to think how closely our paths have crossed. If he’d just come into The Bistro for a cup of coffee, he might very well have been reunited with his dog.

Once Jill arrives for her shift, Paco and I take off, leaving The Bistro in Sarah’s more than capable hands. I’m itching to call Travis and find out if he’s questioned anyone who attended the séance yet, but I don’t want to seem like a pest. Brittany and Will are both at work and Betty Jean is getting a massage, so there’s no one around to listen to any of my theories.

Then it occurs to me. There’s someone else already involved in this case who, despite his less than kosher way of doing business, has proven himself to be quite clever. He also took off last night before I could finish finding out everything he might know. I dig up the business card that Rebecca gave me and check out the address at the bottom. Jake Gitty’s office is only fifteen minutes from here.

I bend down to look Paco in the eye. “We’re going to go pay the mean man a call, but you have to be on your best behavior. Promise?”

Paco hesitates just long enough that I begin to think he might not have understood me, but then he barks once. With attitude, of course.
