“I wish my mother would be more reasonable when she speaks of Mr Bingley’s return,” Jane said.

“She ought not to speak about his love for you, but you cannot disagree with her expectations?” Concern for her sister gave Elizabeth an object on which to concentrate, rather than wondering if Mr Bingley would bring Darcy.

“Let me first see how Mr Bingley behaves when we see him again.”

“At his own ball, he offended two or three young ladies by not asking them to dance, and I spoke to him twice myself without receiving an answer. Is not general incivility the very essence of love?”

“You are trying to divert me with your nonsense.”

“It is not nonsense. Now all you need do is become even more beautiful so as to make Mr Bingley incapable of doing anything other than falling at your feet the moment he sees you.”

It was fortunate that Jane’s beauty needed no such improvements because hours later Mrs Bennet ran down the stairs shrieking, “Mr Bingley is come! I saw him from my dressing room window. And on the day of his return!”

Elizabeth went to the window and saw that Mr Bingley was alone.

Elizabeth’s security sank; she choked back the sob that threatened to escape from her throat. Jane was too intent on staring at the door to take notice. Elizabeth raised the handkerchief she clutched in her hand, but quickly shoved it into her sleeve when she discerned the F.D. embroidered in the corner.

When Mr Bingley came in, he was occupied again by Mrs Bennet’s overbearing attentions.

“It is a long time, Mr Bingley, since you went away.”

“’Tis less than a week!” Lydia rolled her eyes.

“I always intended on soon returning and, in fact, would have returned on Saturday if I had had my own way.”

“Miss Lucas is to be married to Mr Collins since you were away. It is hard to think that Charlotte Lucas should be mistress of this house. I did not anticipate their match; we all thought Lizzy would have him, and I do wish I had the comfort of a daughter married.”

Although Elizabeth was made to feel uncomfortable, Mr Bingley gave no indication he wished to be elsewhere. The half hour was chatted away, and by the end of it, Mr Bingley enthusiastically agreed to join their evening party tomorrow.
