Leo had no idea why most of their deepest conversations seemed to happen at night, when they should both be sleeping. All he knew was that after a few months of roadies and whispered discussions, he knew Cisco better than he's ever known another person.

But he still thought twice—okay, fine, more like twelve times—before he said, "Do you want kids? You know, someday?"

Cisco made the little humming noise that meant he was thinking about it. Leo didnt even think he knew he was doing it. "Maybe? I don't know. I want to go pro, and that schedule would be hard. I'd be gone so much. I'd feel bad leaving them."

"You'd have enough money to pay someone to take care of them," Leo pointed out, even though he's pretty sure he knew what Cisco's reaction would be.

"It's not the same." Enough light filtered in around the blackout curtains that he could see Cisco bite his lip as he searched for words. "My mom had a hard time raising us after Dad died. But she made sure—we always knew she loved us, how important we were to her. If I’m not sure I can do that for a kid, I don't know if I should have one."

Leo resisted the urge to rub at his chest. The ache he felt wasn't physical. Touch wouldn’t make it go away.

"What about you?" Cisco asked after a second. "You're good enough to go pro too, you know?"

Swallowing was hard when it felt like something was clutching at his heart. "It's harder for goalies," Leo managed. "And you know I'm pre-med."

"You always say that like you've been sentenced to life in jail." Cisco slowed down, his voice becoming cautious. "You know you get to make the decisions, right? Not your dad."

Leo shrugged. "He's paying for this."

Cisco opened his mouth, then closed it again. The wash of relief that went through Leo was almost shocking in its strength. The last place he wanted to think about his dad, to talk about the expectations that came with the Carrington name—the name he’d never asked for—was here. This space was for them, for Leo and Cisco.

When they were alone like this, just the two of them, he could pretend it would last forever.
