During the next few days, Jud showed Bill not only around Greenwich Village, but also around New York, took him on the Staten Island Ferry and up to the top of the Woolworth Building. They got such a kick out of the uninhibited sightseeing it was hard to realize they had so recently been partners in fantastic sexual exploits.

Phil Hawkins, Jonathan Felton, and their families returned to Oyster Bay sooner than they'd originally intended. Phil had felt painfully restless in Palm Beach, and he wasn't sure why, but he admitted to Jonathan he thought it had something to do with Jud Elkov, that it made him uneasy that Jud was spending all the time with another boy. Jonathan encouraged Phil to use a reunion at their eating club at Princeton as an excuse to return to the city early, a reunion they had originally intended to miss. Actually, Jonathan himself was eager to end the “vacation", for homosexual pickings in the closed society at the famous resort were so slim that he'd twice persuaded Phil to let his cock be sucked.

Phil did not send word to Jud he was returning, for reasons that weren't clear to him. However, he lacked the courage to appear unexpectedly at the apartment on West Fourth Street alone, and persuaded Jonathan to come with him. They were on their way to Princeton, so would stop by only for an hour at most, to reassure Phil that Bill Powers was no threat to his continued happiness. If he had a friend with him, he reasoned, it would not be as likely to betray the nature of the relationship to Bill Powers, assuming Bill was only what Jud had said he was.

They arrived late in the afternoon. Bill Powers, faithful to his exercises, was taking full advantage of the superior equipment Jud bought at Abercrombie & Fitch. He was doing his exercises stripped, for he saw no reason why he shouldn't. Jud was in the kitchen starting preparations for dinner. Out of consideration for Bill's limited funds, Jud cooked most of their meals. Bill was apparently unaware how expensive the ingredients were.

Without thinking, Phil let himself in the door of the building with his key. When he and Jonathan approached the door of the apartment, Phil belatedly realized he should have rung the bell, but decided merely to knock on the apartment door.

Bill Powers was not startled when he heard the knock on the door. He assumed it was Gloria, and since he never bothered to put clothes on for her, he put down the weights he had been using and opened the door.

Phil and Jonathan were startled to see the blond young Greek god standing in front of them. Bill was startled not to see Gloria, but since it was a couple of fellows facing him he was only mildly embarrassed. “Oops,” he said. “I thought it was my analyst.”

“I'm... we're friends of Jud Elkov's,” Phil said. “Is he here?”

“Oh, sure,” Bill said, opening the door wide.
