Chapter 17

The following morning Dallas strode across the yard searching for Toby. Besides the personal errand he was on, he wanted to warn Toby to be on good behavior as Ginny had enough to contend with right now. The sounds of yells from the house triangulated Toby’s exact location.

He paused at the kitchen door and shook his head—triage couldn’t have exhibited more concern. Ginny and Madeline hovered around Toby who was dancing and howling in distress. Sophy, in her highchair before a tray of cheerios, stared wide-eyed trying to decide if this was entertainment or tragedy

“It hurts," wailed Toby.

Dallas snorted and cut in before the females could respond, "Of course it hurts. You shot a gun at a hive of bees and made them mad. Want to tell me how it happened?"

Sophy chose that moment to decide this had the hallmarks of tragedy. She opened her mouth, and forestalling her wail, Dallas lifted her out of her chair and brought her up against his chest. She laid her head against him and eyed Toby.

Toby was suddenly reticent. "I wasn't even close to the bee hive."

"Uh-huh? Then why are they swarming in the field we’re trying to fertilize?"

Toby raised his eyes to his big brother’s face, “I didn't mean to hit the old hive with my gun. I was aiming for the bird in the tree."

Dallas's deep blue eyes met those of his little brother’s squarely, and Toby's were the first to drop.

"Tobias."

No answer.

"Tobias Burton Reid."

Toby's chin came up a fraction but he still didn't meet Dallas's eyes.

"Why were you out with your gun?"

"Because you guys are always busy during the day and after supper you're tired and I'm going to grow clear up and never get to shoot a gun at the rate you're teaching me." It all came out in a burst of young masculine exasperation.

Madeline and Ginny exchanged a grin behind his back, and by the tension in Dallas’ mouth it was apparent he was fighting a smile, though it never appeared on his face.

“So because it wasn’t happening when you wanted, that gave you the right to disobey?”

Toby’s shoulders slumped. “No.”

Dallas ran a hand through his hair. Ginny heart swelled at his bone-deep integrity which led him to help teach a young boy to become a responsible adult.

He sighed, “Well, you did disobey; it’s only God’s grace that you didn’t hit any of the workers out in the field. So, I guess your trip to the observatory is off this week.”

Ginny gave a soundless gasp and took an involuntary step forward. Anger flooded her, How dare he use her rewards as punishment.

Dallas’ head came up and he looked her straight in the eye, his gaze sharpening as he met fire. After a moment, he set Sophy back in her chair and nodded at the door with his head. She stalked out the door ahead of him, leaving Toby’s mom to finish binding his wounds.

Once they were out of earshot, she whirled, “Thank you very much for making all my efforts for nothing.
