Chapter Ten
Corbinâs dead. The thought repeated in my head as I tossed and turned in my bed, trying my best to get at least a couple of hours of sleep. The sun peeked into my window and I sobbed again, pulling my pillow to my face and trying to find any comfort I could. I wanted to text Sam, Ophelia, and Easton, but I decided to wait to tell them in person. They could at least have a good nightâs sleep.
Charlie mewed quietly and pressed his head against my arm. He hadnât left my side since the detective left and was trying his best to soothe me. Esmeralda had chosen a different route and sat at the foot of my bed, watching the door vigilantly like she was keeping me safe in my vulnerable state.
My phone let out a shrill tone, and I snatched it up, turning off my six-thirty a.m. alarm and falling back onto the bed. Should I skip class today? I hesitantly sat up and placed my feet on the floor. I wiggled my toes in the soft rug under my bed and tried to focus on anything besides Corbin. My eyes burned, but no tears came. I had long since dried up after spending the past five hours crying nonstop. Taking a deep breath, I stood up and hobbled to the bathroom. A long, hot shower and clean clothes did wonders for my mood. While I didnât feel good, I felt a little better.
I peeked in on the Furball in my closet. It had gotten so massive in such a short time period and was currently passed out in a mound of dirt. Sleeping like usual. When I first got it, it was the size of a golf ball. Now, it was bigger than a basketball and fuzzier than ever. We had to return them to Dr. Silvius in a week and I was a little sad to have to let the thing go. Itâll be nice having my closet back, though.
The cat food rattled loudly as it fell into the metal bowls, echoing through my empty kitchen. Both of the cats sat in unusual silence, watching me fill their bowls and swishing their tails slowly. A sense of unease fell over me and I stared at the two of them, waiting for them to come eat. They
