Chapter Eight

JAMIE RETURNED TO SAN FRANCISCO with just enough time to take a quick shower and head over to Maeve’s for their dinner and spirituality date. She felt guilty about leaving a sad-eyed Ryan to fend for herself, but she’d come to realize that dealing with a little guilt was better than dealing with a lot of resentment. And if she couldn’t go out and participate in the things she enjoyed—resentment was right around the corner.

When she pulled up in front of the house, Maeve dashed out, looking pretty darned excited. She was dressed very nicely; wearing a print dress Jamie hadn’t seen before, with heels a little higher than she normally wore. Maeve got in and started to buckle her seatbelt. “I always feel like I’m sneaking off from school when I go out on my own,” she said, giggling like a girl.

“You know, I’m not too far from that. As much as I love Ryan, there are a lot of things I like to do that she’ll never, ever want to do with me. But I can’t let that stop me.”

Maeve patted her lightly on the leg. “I never, ever went out on my own during my first marriage.” Whenever she talked about her late husband, she always seemed sad. Jamie had the feeling her sorrow had little to do with mourning, and much more with regret. “I won’t make that mistake with Marty. If we both pursue our interests, we’ll have more to talk about when we’re together.”

“What does Martin like to do?” Jamie asked, having never seen him go anywhere but work and church.

“Nothing,” Maeve said, smiling. “He loves to tinker around in the yard, have an early dinner, then read the paper while he talks back to the TV. I like a little more variety.”

“He sounds like his daughter, but she doesn’t read the paper or watch TV! She’s perfectly happy to have dinner, then sit on the deck and watch cars go by. I swear she’d be content to never go more than a mile from her home.”

“Consider yourself lucky. Marty would be happy to knock that down to a quarter mile, and that’s only because his favorite bakery is almost in the Mission.”

“We’ve got a real pair of explorers on our hands, Maeve. A regular Lewis and Clark.”

Jamie got in a little after nine, finding Ryan, Conor, Padraig, Seamus and Duffy jammed into Conor’s smallish room, watching baseball. “Hey,” the humans called when she poked her head in. Duffy had the good manners to get up and come over to sniff and lick her knees.

“Hey.” She entered and saw Seattle and the Yankees on the screen. “Uhm…didn’t this happen yesterday?”

“Shh!” Several voices rose as one. “We don’t know what happened. It’s on tape.”

“I know what happened,” she teased. “I read the paper.”

“My father would slay me to even think this, but I’ll deck you if you tell,” Seamus threatened.

“Then I’d have to kick your ass and it’d get ugly,” Ryan said, turning to wink at Jamie.
