Trust Me If You Dare

“Of? I think Kendal’s boyfriend is a knuckle-dragging lunatic. He scared the shit out of me, but he’s

not smart enough to play games with either you or Gun. Why didn’t you call the police?”

“Gun received a gift. He’s an actor—people send him crap all the time.”

“Quite right. In the past, I let my secretaries handle my packages.” Gunter’s blond brows wiggled

suggestively above the thin frames of his designer glasses, and I almost laughed.

Dan snapped his gum. “Seriously, the police can do nothing. This is why Gun hired me. What

happened to you this morning?”

“Stew, excuse me, Lester Finch— Jesus. What the heck kind of name is that anyway? It has to be an alias.”

“Nope.”

“Well, Lester and Carrera are both following me. I think someone has residual rage left over from

Cappy’s. His hand was banged up.” I described the fingers to Dan.

Gun tossed, “Serfs him right. He’s vile.”

“Yes, well, be that as it may, I don’t understand why Finch pursued me this morning. I mean other

than the finger ac—cident.” I stumbled, remembering the subway door closing on the fingers of his good

hand. I cleared my throat. “I never saw that man before yesterday. If he’s pissed at Gun, shouldn’t he be—

ooohh. You mean Stew is your GPS guy.” I looked at Gun. “So he made a pass at you, you told Kendal, Kendal freaked and blamed you—”

“I do bring out the beast in some men.”

“Gun.” Dan sounded annoyed, and I knew that spending time with Gunter was wearing on him.

“So you fired Kendal, and Finch got dumped—he was tracking your car because you’re the cause of

his misery? It certainly fits his thug personality profile.”

Dan nodded. “Probably. If he was at Cappy’s, then yeah, he was tracking the BMW—I had Gun leave

the car with my guy to be serviced.”

My guy. “Aren’t those things illegal?”

“Yup.”

“But…but…what about Kendal? Did she send the razor or did Lester?” Actually, Lester Finch was

probably spending his day at the closest Intermediate Care Facility. It would be tricky to bandage one

injured hand with the other. I’d had a hard enough time taping my own ribs. “Why would that creep give a reporter my driver’s license? Other than for money. There’s no sound reason. Jorge Carrera wasn’t even at Cappy’s when I had my accident.”

“Accidents,” Dan corrected.

“Right. That car accident happened before I ever crossed paths with Carrera.”

I was using the word accident a lot.

Dan said. “Maybe—”
