Across America, the hearing was drawing a huge amount of interest, with an estimated 13.8 million watching on television, according to Nielsen’s tracking of viewership on the major network and cable stations. Fox News had the largest audience, averaging about 2.9 million viewers at any given moment, up from its usual daytime average of about 1.5 million. MSNBC was close behind with 2.7 million, up from its usual 1 million. Not counted: people catching video clips on their phones or watching on livestreams at work.

For the millions tuning in to the Ukraine story for the first time, there had been a lot to absorb. The hearing format itself was a challenge: questions that assumed knowledge, answers that weren’t always crisp or clear, opening statements that required close listening. Add to that the nature of American life in the digital age, people busy with their lives, catching snatches of testimony from YouTube clips or reading a quoted line or two on Twitter.

Were the facts adding up to a coherent story? Were most people understanding the case that the Democrats were trying to make? Hard to know. Especially hard to know from inside the hearing room, under the bright lights of modern day congressional.
