As the dust began to settle, the full extent of the horror became clear. Protruding from the rubble were the broken, blood-spattered bodies of dead children, many of them as young as five or six. Distraught parents who had by now reached the school, tried in vain to lift the collapsed roof. Eventually one of them, Monty Ellsworth, decided to drive back to his farm in order to fetch a heavy rope. On route, he passed Andrew Kehoe, driving back towards the school in his pickup. Kehoe, Ellsworth would later testify, was grinning from ear to ear.
