Twelve

We found Shirley sitting on her boat the next day. She was wearing the same bathing suit we’d seen her in the last time we’d visited. She’d finished her topside paint job. She was using a putty knife to dig out one of the flies she’d painted over.

“Damn flies,” she said. “As soon as you put down white paint, they land in it. Serves them right to get painted over.”

She scratched her nose with the paintbrush still in her hand. A white streak appeared under the bill of her hat. She didn’t seem to notice.

“Did you bring me any smokes?” she asked. “I got a bottle of cheap rum, but you can’t find smokes in this one-horse town.”

“Sorry,” I said. “We haven’t been to town. You don’t have to buy cheap booze anymore Shirl. You’ve got twenty grand.”

“Expensive rum ain’t no better than the cheap stuff,” she said. “Fancy liquor is a waste of money.”

“We’ve got some news,” I said.

“Is it good or bad?” she asked.

I proceeded to explain what we’d been through and what we’d found. I told her about the intrinsic but unknown value of the statue. The value of the bars was tied to the value of the little gold man. If there was some great historical relevance to the whole collection, it would be worth many times more than just selling the bars for their gold value.

“How many of them bars have you got?” she asked.

“Eleven,” I said. “You gave us two. We found ten more, but we sort of lost one.”

“He gave it away,” Holly chimed in. “But it was the only way to get us out of a jam.”

“Trouble?” asked Shirley.

“We had to run some pirates off,” I told her. “But I think we’ve seen the last of them.”

“Is that all there is?” she asked.

“We think there're another forty or so bars,” I said. “And a few more figurines.”

“Why didn’t you bring up the rest of it?” she asked.

“Equipment failure, storms, shark attack,” I said. “We’re lucky we got anything at all, the way everything went wrong for us.”

“Now what?” she asked. “You just gonna leave it down there?”

“We hope to find a proper treasure recovery boat,” I said. “Go back and sweep the place clean.”

“I want to go with you,” she said. “I’m bored out of my gourd here. Only so many times I can go to the Little Bar.”

“We’re going to the Keys first,” I said. “Hopefully, we’ll come back with what we need to get the job done.”

“I’d just like to be on that boat when a big old pile of gold comes up,” she said. “That would tickle me pink. I’ve dreamt about it my whole life.”

“Give Holly your phone number,” I said. “We’ll let you know when we’re on our way.”

“I’ll meet you in Pelican Bay,” she said. “Don’t start digging without me.”

There was no reason she couldn’t come along. She already owned half of whatever we might recover. I looked forward to seeing her face when we finally brought up the rest of it.
